Bow Types

Have you seen The Hunger Games or Arrow and found yourself wondering about archery? What does it feel like to hit your target? Does it seem like fun, but you’re not sure what to look for? A Google search for archery will pull up our favorite heroes – Katniss, Robin Hood, Legolas – alongside the archery Olympians of today. That looks so exciting, but the question looms,

Where do I begin?

Well, a bow and a set of arrows is probably a good start, but archery equipment is complicated and plenteous. So, I have developed a guide to help you begin making your decision of what type of bow you would like to shoot.

1. Olympic Recurve

  • Good for beginners
  • The only type of bow used in the Olympics
  • Easiest to transport because the pieces come apart
  • Used by Hawkeye in the Marvel Comics
  • Pictured is a Galaxy Take-Down Recurve

2. Compound

  • Good for beginners
  • Easiest to aim
  • Most powerful
  • Used for hunting
  • Used by Green Arrow in the Arrow series
  • Pictured is a Genesis Compound

3. Barebow

  • For advanced archers
  • Sightless shooting
  • Meant for instinctual shooting
  • Used by Katniss in The Hunger Games and Legolas in The Lord of the Rings
  •  Pictured is a Falco Legend Longbow

This list is, of course, quite incomplete. I will go more in depth to each type of bow later, but as you scroll through my blog, you will need this simple introduction to the types of bows you will be seeing here.

Recommendations: I recommend that, when you start shooting, you begin with trying both compound and recurve bows at a shooting range before you make any final or purchasing decisions.
